In many instances, existing structures are not held to the same air infiltration requirements that are imposed on new construction. It may still be a good idea or necessary to make improvements to the existing structure to reduce air leakage and save on heating and cooling costs.

New construction has significant advantages over existing construction when comparing opportunities to air seal a unit or home.

With the internal framing completely open, inspection of polyseal, blocking, and other air sealing strategies are much easier than attempting to air seal an existing structure.
